A good sign that you may have plantar fasciitis, one of the most common forms of heel pain, is if you have tightness and pain in your heel and foot first thing in the morning. Pronounced PLAN-tar fash-e-EYE-tus, named after the ligament that becomes inflamed (plantar fascia), this condition is caused when repeated strains occur on the ligament that supports the arch of the foot. This can cause tiny tears, which lead to swelling and pain.
Plantar fasciitis affects people of all ages but mostly is found in people who walk on hard floors for long periods of time, overweight individuals, long distance runners, soldiers, those entering into or that have past middle age, and folks that have high arches or flat feet. There is a good sign that you might have plantar fasciitis if you experience symptoms such as heel and arch pain with:
- The first few steps you take when you get out of bed,
- After sitting for a long period of time and then begin to walk,
- After walking for a long period of time,
- When you stand on your tip-toes, or
- When climbing the stairs
This condition, left untreated, will get worse overtime due to the continued strain on the ligament, causing inflammation and tension around the heel. After a prolonged period of strain, the body forms calcium deposits on the heel bone. Plantar fasciitis is also known as heel spur syndrome.
